Motorola StarTAC III

Motorola StarTAC III

Motorola announces the launch of StarTAC III in Seoul. A state-of-the-art handset in its own right, StarTAC III is the modern reincarnation of StarTAC, widely recognized as a revolution in mobile technology and design.

“Retro is the cultural movement of the 1960s, embodied by such celebrities as The Beatles and Twiggy - it has been reinterpreted in a trendy and cutting-edge manner to enhance its originality and value,” stated Lim Joung Ah, Marketing Director of Motorola Korea. “In the similar manner, Motorola’s StarTAC is being revived to become the timeless accessory in Korea.”

Motorola’s StarTAC III naturally retains many of the original aesthetic features that made StarTAC so classic. The new handset will be instantly recognizable by its chic black coloring, specially-developed scratch-resistant façade, shoulders that curve gracefully around the hinge, a smoothly contoured front, and of course the distinctive StarTAC opening chime.

StarTAC III features a full 2.0 inch TFT QVGA LCD screen,, GPS, “Moneta M-Bank,” an electronic dictionary with over three hundred thousand words, and MP3 playback. The Motorola StarTAC III will be released in early March, and priced at 297,000 KRW.

Helio Heat with Electrostatic Touchpad

amsung - Helio Heat

Virtual network operator Helio announced the Heat, a uniquely stylized slider phone. The variant of the Samsung A303 uses touch-sensitive controls around the central keypad, minimizing the clutter at the front. As with the Drift, GPS is built-in and uses Google Maps to both pinpoint the phone's location as well as use the carrier's Buddy Beacon feature to find other users. A 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and MP3/MP4 playback are further shared with other Helio models. Software and a gallery follow after the jump.

Web-friendly software is the true novelty of the phone, Helio says. For the first time, mobile versions of Boing Boing, Digg, Metroblogging, and Wikipedia are accessible from the phone -- allowing cellphone owners to track and contribute to alternative news sources. All four sites will be available for free by the end of this month when accessed with an unlimited data plan; the Heat itself is available today in Onyx for $150 and will ship in the pictured Gold in the near future.

Grundig U900 Linux phone

Grundig U900 Linux phone

Grundig Mobile has pushed the U900 into the running of upcoming Linux-based phones race. The impact maybe promising as this little baby provides with UMTS 3G support. The phone has a 2” QVGA (240x320 pixels), 262K color display screen and a 2MP CMOS camera (with flash). It supports most multimedia formats like MP3, AAC, JPEG, GIF, BMP, etc. It also handles video playback.
There’s a whole 100MB of memory for users to utilize to their leisure. In addition to this it also has a microSD expansion slot. Connectivity specs include Bluetooth and USB support. Other features include FM Radio, Front camera for video conferencing, WAP and HTML browsing and GPRS. The phone is powered by a Li-Ion 1000 mAh battery and provides with talk time of 2.5 hours. The company hasn’t disclosed the availability or price as yet.

Sony Ericsson new Walkman phone W880i

Sony Ericsson W880i
The Sony Ericsson W880i is an ultra-slim and exceptionally light 3G phone at just 9.5mm thick and an astonishing 72 grams in weight. The light weight is more surprising given that the W880i has a stainless steel finish.

The display is a 1.8" 240x320 pixel TFT panel in 262,000 colour, and the W880i has a two megapixel primary camera with a secondary camera for video calls. A 1GB Memory Stick Micro card is included in the box, which by our calculations is enough for about 16 albums worth of high-quality audio. The W880i has stereo Bluetooth and an enhanced version of the Walkman player.

The W880i is a UMTS 2100 MHz 3G phone with tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM, but there's no word of a "W880a" version for North America. The W888c is a non 3G tri-band GSM version of the W880i with the video calling camera omitted, aimed at mainland China.

Talktime on GSM is quoted as 6.5 hours with 17 days standby time and up to 20 hours of music playback. 3G use and Bluetooth will reduce the battery life, of course.

The other features on the Sony Ericsson W880i are very similar to other handsets in the current crop of "Walkman" phones - there's a web browser, email client (with push capabilities), RSS newsreader, speakerphone, video streaming and of course a comprehensive multimedia player.

There are some compromises with the Sony Ericsson W880i though - the main one is the size of the screen. Although it's a 240x320 pixel display, it is only 1.8", compared with the 1.9" display on the lower end W610i and display sizes of over 2.0" on many other phones.. however, the slightly smaller screen has advantages in weight and power consumption. There's no flash on the main camera (and 3.2 megapixels would have been much nicer), and unlike some other "Walkman" phones, the W880i doesn't have an FM radio. The other missing feature is the lack of quad-band GSM and the W880i doesn't have EDGE support either - so this is very much aimed at UMTS 2100 users only. This is nit-picking really - if you want some of these features in a Sony Ericsson "Walkman" phone, then you have plenty of other choices available.

In terms of looks, the W880i combines Sony Ericsson's typical understated design with a distinctly stylish finish. Combined with the ultra-slim form factor, and the W880i will clearly have plenty of "wow" factor. The W880i will come in two colour schemes of "Steel Silver" and "Flame Black".

Sony Ericsson say that the W880i should be available in the first quarter of 2007 in selected markets.

Nokia 6301 UMA Phone with Wi-Fi

Nokia 6301 Nokia launched its new Nokia 6301 phone. they bring Wi-Fi to a wider audience with the 6301. The bar-shaped phone incorporates the wireless standard both to provide a fast alternative for Internet access and to offer calls over Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA); as with earlier phones of its kind, the 6301 can automatically hand over calls from the cellular network to VoIP and back. This not only saves cellular minutes when calls begin on Wi-Fi but also improves reception indoors; many users could scrap a landline entirely with a supporting cell carrier, Nokia says. To reflect this, the 6301 comes bundled with a desk stand to let the phone charge without losing its connection to a home wireless network.

The handset still includes many of Nokia's stronger mid-range features and includes a 2-megapixel camera as well as AAC, MP3, and WMA music support on microSD storage up to 4GB in size; users can also turn to FM radio in a pinch, says the company. Calling time is rated at a relatively brief 3.5 hours. The 6301 should go on sale before the end of the year for 230 Euros ($321) bundled with both its stand and a 128MB microSD card. Service is expected to start with the European cellular provider Orange and should spread worldwide, though tri-band GSM will limit the device's use in North America.

Nokia N96 SmartPhone

Nokia N96 Smart Phone
Nokia's long-awaited sequel to the N95 smartphone may have been spotted, according to a leak posted in Mobile-Review's forums. It looks like Nokia N81, though the form is close to Nokia N95: the numeric keyboard sliding from the bottom and the panel sliding from the top (it is empty on the photo, so we don’t know its destination, probably it carries sensor media player buttons). Taking into account the pictures, Nokia N96 is powered by S60 3rd Edition FP2 (Symbian OS 9.5), the platform hasn’t been announced yet. The rear panel hides a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and dual LED flash. The source hasn’t provided more details about the specs or the release date.

Nokia 3110 Evolve

Nokia 3110 Evolve
If you're the sort of person who thinks that not using a plastic bag for your shopping is actually some meaningful way to save the planet, then the Nokia 3110 Evolve is for you.

Based on an unremarkable and fairly inexpensive handset launched earlier this year, the 3110 Evolve is a basic tri-band GSM phone with a 128 x 160 pixel display, 1.3 megapixel camera, FM stereo radio, microSD expandable memory and an MP3 player, plus Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

It's a pretty lightweight handset at 87 grams, but you can tell by the specification that the screen is the 3110 Evolve's biggest weakness.

So what makes this different from a standard 3110? Well, Nokia say that there is "bio-sourced material on the covers", and they also say that the cover material is 50% renewable - so we guess that it uses some sort of plant-based hydrocarbon compound rather than plastic from fossil fuels. The Nokia 3110 Evolve comes in a much smaller sales package consisting of 60% recycled content, and there's a new more efficient phone charger. Nokia say that the charger uses "94% less energy than the Energy Star requirements" but does not give any figures comparing it to a standard unit.

3110 Evolve In other words, the Nokia 3110 Evolve uses less plastic, is more efficient to transport and uses less power than a standard 3110. These are all good things, but add them together and they are hardly going to counteract all the billions of tons of carbon dioxide that humans are pumping into the atmosphere. Sure, getting a slightly greener phone (and using less plastic bags) is a good thing - but real change will require much harder lifestyle choices than this. And surely this sort of approach from manufacturers is the very least we should expect.

We think that there is a fatal flaw in Nokia's thinking - the Nokia 3110 Evolve is not the sort of phone that you'll want to hang onto for a few years. The limitations of the low-resolution screen will probably drive many people to replace it quite early. Our advice is this - buy a better phone, and keep it for longer. Then when you've finished with it, recycle it and raise some money for a worthwhile charity. Oh, and unplugging your phone charger when not in use is a good thing too.

The Nokia 3110 Evolve should be available during Q1 2008. No pricing was available at the time of going to press.

Nokia World 2007: Nokia outlines its vision of Internet evolution and commitment to environmental sustainability

Amsterdam, The Netherlands - At the annual Nokia World conference today, Nokia outlined its vision for the mobile industry, predicting rapid change driven by the convergence of mobility and the internet, and the need for the industry to make an increasing contribution to environmental sustainability. In his keynote address, Nokia president and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo highlighted Nokia's commitment to driving both trends.

Speaking to an audience of some 2,700 delegates who had gathered in Amsterdam to experience Nokia's vision of the mobility industry's future, Kallasvuo said: "We are at the dawn of a new era in mobile communications driven by the rapid convergence of the internet and mobility, and Nokia is setting the pace of change. But with market leadership in an industry of this scale also comes responsibility," he said. "We are committed to taking a leading role in increasing environmental awareness and performance right across the industry, creating further products and services that help people make more sustainable choices. It is both the responsible thing to do and it makes good business sense."

Nokia unveils "Comes With Music"
During the event the company announced Nokia Comes With Music, a revolutionary program that enables people to buy a Nokia device with a year of unlimited access to millions of tracks from a range of great artists - past, present and future. Once the year is complete, customers can keep all their music without having to worry about it disappearing when their subscription is over.

"We set out to create the music experience that people are telling us they are looking for - all the music they want in the form of unlimited downloads to their mobile device and PC," said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Multimedia, Nokia. "Even if you listened to music 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you would still only scratch the surface of the music that we're making available. Comes with Music fulfils our dream to give consumers all the music they want, wherever they want it, while rewarding the artists who create it."

The program will launch with Universal Music Group International, and Nokia is in discussion with the remaining major international labels.

Universal Music Group International Chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge was at Nokia World to launch the program with Nokia. "It's fantastic to work with Nokia on Comes With Music," said Grainge. "We feel it's an innovative way for people to discover and enjoy new artists, while at the same time having access to the amazing depth of the Universal catalog. Comes With Music allows our artists to reach new audiences in a very easy and affordable way."

Ovi - your personal dashboard to life
Nokia also gave further details of the upcoming Ovi Internet services environment. Ovi, meaning 'door' in Finnish, enables consumers to easily access their existing social network and content, acting as a dashboard to a person's life.

"Ovi combines the mobile, PC and web environments into an easy to use experience with common user interface elements that provide consistency and simplicity," said Vanjoki. "We started the Ovi services rollout with the individual services in navigation, music and games, and the next step is to provide an integrated experience. The complete Ovi environment and new services will be rolled out continuously throughout 2008."

Towards greater environmental sustainability
Nokia also outlined its long heritage in addressing environmental issues and commitment to driving new initiatives in the mobile industry in areas such as energy efficiency, materials used in products, take back, recycling, and packaging. This was against the background of the launch of the Nokia 3110 Evolve, a mobile device with bio-covers made from more than 50% renewable material. The device is presented in a small package made of 60% recycled content and it comes with Nokia's most energy efficient charger yet, using 94% less energy than the Energy Star requirements*.

The Nokia 3110 Evolve is the latest in a series of environmental initiatives from the company. For example, Nokia was the first manufacturer to put alerts into its devices to encourage people to unplug their chargers. The power that could be saved globally by all Nokia phone users unplugging their chargers when no longer needed is equivalent to enough energy to power 100,000 average-size European homes. In February 2006, Nokia also introduced new compact packaging that reduced materials used by 54%, a move which by the end of this year will have resulted in 5,000 fewer trucks needed to distribute products, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and savings of EUR 100 million.

BenQ rolls out C30 Mobile Phone

BenQ C30 Cellphone
BenQ rolls out new BenQ C30 mobile phone. The C30 is a stylish phone that features a unique top key design that lets consumers enjoy multimedia entertainment with more ease and fun. The dedicated access keys allow consumers to easily access FM radio, MP3 player and camera functions. The BenQ C30 is designed with a stylish color combination to meet the vigorous lifestyles of consumers today. Weighing only 77g, its compact size creates a comfortable feel when gripped, and the unique designed access keys on top of the mobile phone meets consumers’ entertainment needs for a smart interface that integrates FM radio, MP3 player and camera. This design allows one click access to a built-in FM radio with dual loud speakers, a MP3 player that supports MP3, WAV, MIDI, AMR, and AAC formats, and a VGA camera that supports AVI video recording and playback.

Equipped with a microSD card slot for storing more files, the BenQ C30 is the ultimate accessory for young consumers, and allows easy access when transferring files from PC to phone using USB.

BenQ T33 music phone

BenQ T33

BenQ concluded its week with news of the T33, a new music-oriented slider phone designed for ease of use above all else. A side music key automatically cues up the music player regardless of where the user might be in the interface, helping manage AAC and MP3 tracks.
The number pad also implements a unique, wave-like design which is said to be easy to use for dialing while also being fashionable. MicroSD cards up to 2GB hold the phone's pre-recorded media as well as photos or AVI and MPEG-4 videos captured using the 2-megapixel camera. An FM radio tuner is also available as an alternative source of entertainment, BenQ says.

The phone operates on a tri-band GSM radio and so is most likely to be sold in BenQ's Asian home as well as in Europe. Although focused on media, the handset relies primarily on the legacy GPRS format for connecting to the Internet rather than EDGE or a 3G technology like HSDPA. BenQ did not mention an exact release date or a price, though the T33 may be ready immediately and is expected to sell for relatively little without the added mobile broadband chipset.

HTC Touch DUAL Phones

HTC P6500
A third phone, the P6500, is targeted at business users and is the most likely to arrive in the US. Its quad-band GSM radio with tri-band HSDPA allows it to reach 3G Internet speeds both in Europe and North America. In a rare addition, the phone also sports dual SD card slots for either extra storage or peripherals that fit into the small spaces, such as Wi-Fi adapters. True GPS is built-in and easily legible with a 3.5-inch screen. A 3-megapixel camera on the back provides both photos and the resolution needed to scan barcodes or business cards, HTC says. Europeans receive the P6500 in November.

Touch DUAL

HTC announced Touch DUAL smartphone for the rest of 2007. The handset includes the same controversial TouchFLO interface as the original Touch but adds a slide-out keypad, allowing users to make a call or perform SureType-style typing without having to use the on-screen interface. It drops Wi-Fi but gains 3G over HSDPA and UMTS on Europe's 2,100MHz frequency and offers a more responsive 400MHz main processor. The device should come with 128MB of RAM, 256MB of permanent storage, and the earlier microSD slot. Motorola RIZR Z6 announced

Motorola RIZR Z6

At CES 2007 Las Vegas Motorola joined the gang and presented the successor of the popular RIZR Z3 - the MOTORIZR Z6. The new slider is part of the new MOTOMUSIC platform and comes along with the updated EDGE version of the Motorola MING A1200 model. It seems that Motorola would keep their marketing strategy of producing slightly updated version to their existing handsets instead of making entirely new mobiles from scratch. The prospects of a new group of music-oriented devices sounds exciting since this is the current trend on the market and Motorola didn't have such mobiles up until now.

The Motorola RIZR Z6 will run on a new Linux-Java-based user interface and promises enhanced music experience featuring connectivity with Windows Media Player 11 and supporting Janus DRM. It will have the same design as its predecessor RIZR Z3 with almost the same size but it will weigh 10 g less. The new RIZR Z6 will have an improved display - this time with QVGA resolution, but it will retain the 2 megapixel camera of the predecessor. We hope that there would be some improvement in the camera quality department too since the RIZR Z3 deserved some criticism along that line of functionality. The MOTORIZR Z6 is expected to be available in the first half of 2007.

LG KG290 Slider Phone

LG KG290
The LG KG290 Slider Phone was released earlier this month after much anticipation. This slider phone is small and slim enough to slip comfortably in your pocket, and features a nice 1.7-inch TFT color screen, and a numerical keypad that slides out vertically. A 1.3-megapixel camera is also included in the phone, which is also capable of recording video. An FM radio is integrated into the phone as well.

One complaint that has so far emerged about the phone online in comments by users is the fact that it does not come pre-packaged with a USB cord, so if you're thinking about buying one you'll likely need to get a USB cable of your own that works with the phone.

Talk time on the LG KG290 is up to 200 hours stand-by, and up to 2-hours of talk-time. The phone is available in two color choices: black and grey. It is currently available in Japan.

Sony Ericsson K770 Cyber-shot Phone

Sony Ericsson K770
Sony Ericsson have been doing very well in sales recently - last Christmas they hit the number one spot in some European markets, ahead of Nokia. The reason for this was their strong line-up of Walkman and Cyber-shot handsets - and the Sony Ericsson K770i is the latest in this long line of phones, due to hit the market this autumn.

The Sony Ericsson K770i is a lightweight 3G phone, coming in at 95 grams and just 14.5mm thick. There's a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, plus a 1.9" 240x320 pixel display.

Sony Ericsson K770i Because it's a Cyber-shot branded phone, the K770i comes with more than just a camera. There's a built-in "photo fix" application for helping to adjust those pictures that just didn't quite come out correctly. Plus the K770i has stereo Bluetooth, FM radio, Memory Stick Micro expandable memory (256Mb included in the box), a multimedia player, an email client, web browser and RSS reader. If you're familiar with previous Cyber-shot branded phones, then you'll know what to expect.

Sony Ericsson are quoting an astonishing 10 hours talktime when used on GSM, but this drops down to 2.5 hours when used on a 3G network. Standby time in either mode is a maximum of 16 days which is impressive.
Sony Ericsson K770 Cyber Shot
t appears to be a good phone, but apart from the slightly peculiar 1970s style brown colour there's very little that makes the K770i stand out from the increasingly crowded range of Sony Ericsson phones. There are a lot.. really a lot of Cyber-shot and Walkman phones in the range and Sony Ericsson are in danger of stretching the brand too far. Yes, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash is pretty good, but the K810i and K850i are much better imaging phones and are far more worthy of the "Cyber-shot" branding.

Still, the K770i is unlikely to disappoint, with it's compact frame and unfussy good looks. Just don't expenct people to go "wow" when they see it - the K770i is far too understated to be a head-turner. Sony Ericsson say that the K770i will be available in selected markets from the autumn.

It’s not clear whether the company plans to launch the device.

Sony Ericsson K660i Review

Sony Ericsson K660i
Sony Ericsson has announced the launch of the K660, an HSDPA (mobile broadband) enabled phone with clever features like illuminated shortcut keys that only become active when surfing the Net, and desktop tickers that provide regular updates from your favourite websites; all designed to make Web browsing on the move as simple and convenient as at your computer.

The K660 makes browsing the mobile Web straightforward. The phone’s navigation key serves as a "magnetic mouse pointer" when in Web mode, letting you find your way around the page just as you would on a PC.

The K660 is engineered to ensure that you’re not kept waiting for the news or content that matters to you. Music, video or email – HSDPA technology lets you download it all at speeds that are up to four times faster than regular 3G.

The K660 squeezes a 2.0 megapixel camera into its compact frame, making it easy to capture the moment. And since the Web is at your fingertips, it’s just a few clicks to upload your picture to your blog and share it instantly with friends and family.

Sony Ericsson P3i

Sony Ericsson P3i
The rumors about Sony Ericsson P3i smartphone has been flying around the net for a while now. Looks like Sony Ericsson have a new UIQ messenger device that will be launching soon. Apparently it will be a P3i under the P series. According to the thumbnail leaked from MSN China, the P3i could be an alternate based on the Elena prototype (like the P1i). Nokia N80 Hands-On Smartphone

Nokia N80 Hands-On Smartphone
N80 combines high multimedia and business functionality in an elegant and stylish design with a slider form factor, which helps it keep a relatively small size when closed and be suitable for carrying it in your pocket – something most smartphones fail at.
As one of best function rich phones of the N-series, it supports 3G networks with video calling capability, wireless network, a 3-megapixel camera and all this combined with a Symbian operating system turns the handset into a powerful device both for work and fun.
People familiar with Nokia’s “history” may find out that the N80 resembles the legendary 7650 slider, which ran on a Symbian OS too and was the first phone with a built-in camera.
A few years on, the N80 is still using Symbian S60 (a few versions newer) and is one of the first phones in America and Europe to feature a 3-megapixel camera.
A standard Nokia N80 package includes the most essential multimedia accessories like headphones (to use with the player and the radio) and a PC connection cable, which is needed when you want to transfer multimedia files between the phone and a PC.

Sony Ericsson 3G Z610 / Z610i

Sony Ericsson 3G Z610
Sony Ericsson officially presents the Z610 as the "shimmering ‘mirror’ clamshell with hidden depths", I do not know if that is suppose to good or bad, but I'll consider it as a compliment to their new cellphone. Actually, the Z610 looks like fantastic in terms of design and the features are not top notch but they aren't bad either.

The hidden 'magic mirrow' display is probably the most coolest things in the design, it is considered hidden because the external display that uses OLED technology will only be revealed when the phone receives a call or any type of message, other than that the display will be invisible - the effect produced by this magic must be really nice to watch. To give it a jewelry status, a mirror finish was applied on the front cover of the cellphone. Comes with a normal 2.0Megapixel camera which will work perfectly in coordination with the Picture Blog application, just a couple of clicks to upload your photos to a blog and they will be live on the internet to share with friends. The 3G technology is also supported, it comes in handy when there is a 2-inch screen to make use of on videocalls, not to talk about Push Email and RSS feed support when making use of the internet.

The Sony Ericsson Z610 will become available during Autumn in 3 different colors: black, pink or blue.

Synaptics Onyx Concept; Next Generation Mobile Phone Concept

Synaptics Onyx Concept ; Next Generation Mobile Phone Concept
Answer your phone with the touch of a cheek! Synaptics and Pilotfish have utilised Synaptics' ClearPad touch screen to enable a new mobile user interface in its Onyx next-generation mobile phone concept. The new concept phone uses ClearPad, an optically clear, capacitive touch screen solution, to create a fully adaptive user interface (UI).
The ClearPad input system eliminates the traditional mechanical keys found on phones today and dramatically adapts to present the information and controls a user needs at any given moment. Claimed to be more intelligent than conventional touch screens, the ClearPad accurately recognizes not only points and taps, but also shapes, complex gestures, and proximity to the user's finger or cheek.
This creates new possibilities such as assigning functions to two-finger taps, closing tasks by swiping an "X" over them, sending messages by swiping them off the screen, or answering a phone by holding it up to your cheek. The prototype phone uses a dynamic UI, where applications are layered and opened simultaneously, allowing a seamless flow of information between applications.

"Mobile phones are no longer used just for making calls -- they have become a single access point for critical day-to-day information," explains Clark Foy, vice president of Synaptics. "The Onyx phone is a breakthrough illustration of how advances in interface technology and collaborative design will drive the future of mobile interactions and services."

Collaborative Design
The Onyx phone is the result of collaboration between Synaptics and Pilotfish, under the philosophy that hardware and software are not two separate fields, but interrelated parts of the overall experience of a product. Utilizing Synaptics' ClearPad touch screen technology & interaction design, Pilotfish created a cutting-edge user interface and industrial design model for OEMs to innovate upon.

"The real meaning of this product is about opening up the channels between hand, eyes, and device, and giving people access to actions and information in a way not possible with conventional buttons," says Brian Conner, leader of the design team for the Onyx at Pilotfish in Munich. "When carrying this out, we integrated the approach to designing product form and user interface, and started by focusing on the actions and experiences around the Onyx – the result is a device where the new interaction possibilities are supported and emphasized by the simple, clear form."

About Synaptics
Synaptics is a leading developer of interface solutions for the mobile computing, communications and entertainment industries.
